Field Day Brochure

Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program (MGSP) is a cooperative effort to reduce the risks of groundwater contamination associated with the use of pesticides and nitrogen fertilizers. The MGSP is a voluntary, locally driven, and designed to address the concerns of individuals by maintaining a focus on the financial and technical constraints that drive real-world decisions. The program is funded through fees assessed on sales of pesticides and nitrogen fertilizers.

The MGSP program promotes groundwater stewardship practices that will help reduce the risk of groundwater contamination.

Farm*A*Syst - Farm*A*Syst is a voluntary and confidential assessment tool that helps farmers identify risks to groundwater associated with their farmstead practices. Farm*A*Syst also provides information on ways to reduce those risks.

Abandoned Well Closure - Abandoned wells can be a serious safety hazard and a threat to our environment. They may even create a health concern for our families and neighbors by contaminating drinking water.

Only a licensed well driller or the landowner can legally close abandoned wells. Specific procedures must be followed to ensure that all safety, environmental and health-related concerns are addressed.

Pesticide Storage - It is preferable to have a separate, dedicated building for pesticide storage. Portable storage units or an enclosed trailer can be modified and used for seasonal pesticide storage. The location of the storage facility, security, proper ventilation, and containment of any potential spill are all essential factors in developing a pesticide storage facility.
